AURORA BOOT CAMP: A Summer Filmmaking Experience for Kids

Each Summer, Aurora hosts filmmaking boot camps where youth can learn about film and video at Aurora Picture Show. As part of our Popcorn Kids programming, Aurora Boot Camps teach hands-on narrative and experimental techniques using digital video from professional filmmakers. Campers use the Aurora office and Menil neighborhood to develop, produce and edit their own short films. Working collaboratively on digital video projects, students are not only exposed to filmmaking techniques but also explore less traditional film and video.
Aurora offers three need-based scholarships to each camp.  For details and an application, please check out the Aurora Boot Camp Scholarship Fund. The Summer Boot Camps are made possible with support from Kinder Morgan Foundation and The Brown Foundation.

Lawndale Artist Studio Program

Artists have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week; access to visiting artists, writers and curators; and will receive
a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program together with an initial $1500 materials budget. If accepted, artists are expected to present a workshop or presentation to the general public and the local arts community to share their practice or explore a related topic.

Works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2011. Lawndale Art Center will work with resident artists to create additional exhibition opportunities during the residency.

Innovative Website to Aid in Funding

“KickStarter is a new site to “fund ideas and endeavors.” The site seems particularly geared to artistic communities that only need a few hundred to a few thousand dollars for a project. I was skeptical at first, but you can browse all the other projects, their funding and see how everything works. A really impressive setup.

You can set up a page to describe your project and funding goals. People from the community can pledge to contribute. If your funding goals are met in the alotted time, you get that money! If not, you get nothing and nobody hands over money.

The benefits are obvious for artists. A little less clear are the benfits to those donating. The site addresses this saying how you can get inventive with creating personal incentives … hmm. But it seems to be working for many people. Seems like a great way to get a little money, which is often all thats needed. Good Luck!”

It kinda sounds like the BBC’s ‘Dragons’ Den’ for the arts world. Good Luck!
