DUE May 28 Lawndale Artist Studio Program

Lawndale Artist Studio Program
2010-2011

ABOUT
Lawndale Art Center develops local contemporary artists and the audience for their art.

The Lawndale Artist Studio Program is part of Lawndale’s ongoing commitment to support the creation of contemporary art by Gulf Coast area artists. With an emphasis on emerging practices, the program will provide three artists with studio space on the third floor of Lawndale Art Center at 4912 Main Street in the heart of Houston’s Museum District.

Artists have full access to their studios 24 hours a day, seven days a week; access to visiting artists, writers and curators; and will receive
a $500 monthly stipend for the duration of the program together with an initial $1500 materials budget. If accepted, artists are expected to present a workshop or presentation to the general public and the local arts community to share their practice or explore a related topic.

Works produced during the program will be exhibited at Lawndale Art Center in May 2011. Lawndale Art Center will work with resident artists to create additional exhibition opportunities during the residency.

TERM
The term of the studio residency program will be nine months beginning September 1, 2010 and ending May 31, 2011. Residents are expected to work a minimum of 16 hours each week in their studios.

Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be 18 years or older and not enrolled in any degree program. The residency is open to all artists, with an emphasis on artists from the Gulf Coast region. Lawndale welcomes applications from artists in all stages of their careers. Former residents, Lawndale staff, current members of the Lawndale Board of Directors and those who have served in the past year, as well as artists currently scheduled to exhibit at Lawndale are not eligible to apply.

**Application Deadline: May 28, 2010 by 4PM**

APPLICATION FEE
A non-refundable application fee of $15 is due with the application and is payable by check or money order.

Photojournalists are like athletes

“Anne Wilkes Tucker, curator of photography at the MFAH, …said she strongly disagrees with those who attribute [photojournalist] Garcia’s success to dumb luck. “When Willie Mays was exactly in the outfield where the ball came down, that was not an accident,” she said. “Photojournalists are like athletes in that way.”
