At this free conference, Kinder Institute Co-Director Dr. Stephen Klineberg will present the central findings of the Houston Arts Survey, the first study of its kind in Houston measuring the way local residents experience the arts.
Two distinguished panels featuring local, regional and national arts leaders will explore the implications of this new research. The conference is generously funded by Houston Endowment, Inc.
The event is preceded by the “Business of the Arts” Luncheon co-sponsored by Houston Arts Alliance and the Greater Houston Partnership.

Panel I: Morphing the Model: Changing Demographics and the Arts
2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Moderator: Pat Jasper – Director of Folklife & Traditional Arts, Houston Arts Alliance
The first panel aims to spur dialogue and interaction around key findings from the Houston Arts Survey, particularly with regard to the changing demographics of the region, to ethnic differences in artistic expression, and to ways of accessing the arts through new media and institutional outlets. The discussion will seek to identify innovative ways to engage Houston’s emerging multiethnic audiences and to promote arts participation among and across the various communities.

Panel II: Planning for the Future: A Message for Houston
3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Moderator: Jonathon Glus – CEO, Houston Arts Alliance
The second panel focuses on initiatives, models and specific actions that can be undertaken to enhance the quality of life in the Houston area in the years ahead. Panelists will present successful examples of initiatives that have already been undertaken in other cities, and discuss the development of a citywide arts-education initiative, the importance of arts workers to the economic and cultural vibrancy of the city, the urgency of undertaking a region-wide cultural planning process, and the possibility of utilizing a comprehensive arts advocacy effort to respond effectively to the survey findings as a whole.
